Since 2020 has been such a difficult year for all of us, the Christmas season finally gives us a chance to have some fun. For many people, there’s nothing better about the holiday season than getting to enjoy the beautiful holiday lights that are always on display throughout Houston. If you and your family are ready to get in the car and tour some of Houston’s best-decorated neighborhoods, here are the top five we here at Proguard believe are the most spectacular. Costing you nothing more than the price of some gas, these displays are available for tours between 7-10 p.m. each night through New Year’s Day.

River Oaks

Always known as one of Houston’s most prominent neighborhoods, River Oaks residents simply outdo themselves year after year. Arguably the most extravagant display of holiday lights anywhere in Houston, the River Oaks neighborhood can be accessed by entering from Kirby, either through Shepherd or Westheimer, and then begin the process of winding your way through the dazzling show of Christmas lights. While most people choose to drive through River Oaks, you do have the option of parking near River Oaks Country Club and taking a walking tour instead.

The Heights and Woodland Heights

Though the vastly popular Light in the Heights has been cancelled this year, you can still enjoy plenty of wonderful holiday lights displays when driving through The Heights and Woodland Heights. An area always known for its friendly charm and holiday spirit, we here at Proguard enjoy this area due to its variety of displays. Whether you are a traditionalist or instead enjoy something new and out-of-the-ordinary, you’ll find it here. As for the best displays in this area, we suggest checking out Heights Boulevard and 19th Street, as well as areas bordered by I-45 and I-10.

Garden Oaks/Oak Forest

Located near Shepherd Park Plaza, the Garden Oaks/Oak Forest neighborhood has been giving Houston’s Christmas fans incredible holiday lights displays since the late 1960s. Known for over-the-top displays that inspire visitors young and old, expect to have a magical experience when you tour this unique Houston area. When you arrive, expect to immediately start seeing not only plenty of holiday lights, but also numerous sightings of Santa Claus and inflatables everywhere you look. As an added bonus, you can also look at the lights located in nearby Candlelight Park, giving you even more reason to smile during your tour.

The Woodlands

Known for setting the bar very, very high for other neighborhoods in Houston to match, The Woodlands is particularly noted for its Panther Creek and Alden Bridge neighborhood displays. Along with thousands upon thousands of lights placed on homes and throughout yards, many of the lighted displays are set to music, creating an even more memorable and fun experience for you and your family. Along with checking out Panther Creek and Alden Bridge, be sure you don’t leave without also taking a tour of the Woodlands Waterway and Market Street, where you can see plenty of holiday lights and beautifully-decorated Christmas trees.

Prestonwood Forest

Finally, no holiday tour of Houston neighborhoods would be complete without making a stop at Prestonwood Forest. Located near Willowbrook in Northwest Houston, Prestonwood Forest has been a must-see for holiday lights enthusiasts since the 1970s. Throughout the month of December, hundreds of homes do their best to outdo one another with their displays of bright holiday lights. However, to make things a bit more interesting, the neighborhood turns it into a true competition to see how far one neighbor will go to win out over their fellow residents. Featuring a holiday-spirited friendly competition, you can vote for the winners in such categories as Best Mailbox, Best Door, Best House, and the widely-acclaimed and prestigious People’s Choice Award. To see the very best areas, we suggest you pay particular attention to the areas from Cypresswood to 249, Charlynne Oaks to Hargrave, and Ravenhurst and Shroeder.

While you’re out touring these various neighborhoods, this may get you to thinking about your various Christmas decorations and where you can store them once the holiday season is over. If you’re tired of trying to store them in your basement or garage, you may want to consider renting a convenient self-storage unit from us here at Proguard.
