Like everything else in 2020, many of our traditional holiday festivities and activities have had to go virtual due to COVID-19. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t have any fun. In fact, many activities that have gone virtual are pulling out all the stops to make this holiday season one to remember for all the right reasons. Whether it’s a play, concert, or other activity, you’re sure to find something you and your entire family will enjoy. As for which virtual events are available here in Houston, we here at Proguard have been hard at working choosing our favorites. After much discussion and debate, here are the ones we think are the very best.

A New Adaptation: A Christmas Carol

If you think Scrooge was a grump back in the day, imagine how his mood has worsened with everything 2020 has brought his way. As big fans of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol, we here at Proguard believe you’ll be fascinated by the Alley Theatre’s virtual production of A New Adaptation: A Christmas Carol. Viewable 24 hours per day now through December 27, this unique play is free for viewing and showcases the Alley Theatre’s many talented performers as they produce a socially-distanced version of this holiday classic from their homes. Sure to inspire you and make you appreciate actors a bit more than you already do, we highly recommend this virtual event.

SPA Christmas Carol

While we’re sure you’ve seen A Christmas Carol performed many times by live actors, we’re willing to bet you’ve never seen a puppet show based on the story. If you haven’t, you’re in for a real treat with this Houston virtual holiday event. Produced by the Society for the Performing Arts, this virtual event will be streamed live from the Chicago studios of Manuel Cinema on Marquee TV. Known for its visually-stunning puppets and scenery, this unique holiday event will captivate you from start to finish. Running through December 19 at 7 p.m. nightly, the cost is only $20.

Carols on the Green

The 3rd annual Carols on the Green, featuring the Houston Grand Opera, is one of Houston’s newest holiday traditions. However, it has quickly found itself becoming one of the city’ most popular holiday events. Forced to go virtual here in 2020, it nevertheless features incredible performances just like usual. Having debuted on December 8, the event is now viewable online so that you can enjoy it at your convenience. Free to view, this year’s event features performances by special guests Jesus Pacheco and Cecilia Duarte. If you are seeking something new for you and your family over the holidays, the Carols on the Green is a can’t-miss virtual event.

Nutcracker Sweets Virtual Film

A holiday tradition for many here in Houston, the Houston Ballet’s version of The Nutcracker has gone virtual this year by becoming a digital film celebrating the wonders of this classic holiday musical. Featuring an abridged version of The Nutcracker from the ballet’s archives, viewers can also look forward to many new works of the Houston Ballet, all of which are set to some of your favorite Christmas carols. Running now through January 8, 2021, you can purchase and view this for only $35.

An Evening with Chevy and Beverly

If like us you are fans of the 1989 holiday classic National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation that starred Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo, you are in for a real treat this holiday season. By tuning into Zoom on Saturday, December 19 at 7 p.m., Houston’s Society for the Performing Arts will be presenting An Evening with Chevy and Beverly. The pair, who starred as husband and wife in this holiday movie, will not only share their favorite clips of the movie, but also discuss their favorite memories of making the movie and even engage in a virtual Q&A with online audience members. Costing only $25, this may be your best opportunity to say hello to some of your beloved movie stars.

While it may not feel quite the same this holiday season, the many virtual holiday events in and around Houston will give you plenty of opportunities to experience the wonderful feelings that come during this time of year. Whether you’re asking Chevy and Beverly a question, enjoying a unique performance of The Nutcracker or A Christmas Carol, or any of the other virtual holiday events in Houston, we’re sure you’ll have plenty of fun. From us here at Proguard, have a safe and happy holiday season.
