If you live in the greater Houston area or are visiting for the holidays, you will be happy to know that the city offers plenty of family-friendly events. Houston is especially fun during the Thanksgiving holiday. There are all sorts of things to do downtown ranging from parades to turkey trots and tree lightings.
Houston’s TXU Energy Turkey Trot
Kick off Thanksgiving with some exercise by getting up bright and early for the TXU Energy Turkey Trot. It starts at 7 AM on the big day. This is the perfect event for families that value physical fitness or those that would like to build up an appetite for the feast that will take place later in the day. The TXU Energy Turkey Trot features a collection of races including the 5K, the 10K and a run reserved just for the kids. Adults pay between $30 and $35 while kids cost only $15. All proceeds go to families served by the city’s Neighborhood Centers.
Houston’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
Head on out to Lamar at Smith to catch the launch of Houston’s 66th annual Thanksgiving Day Parade. Referred to as “Houston on Parade”, the event begins on turkey day at 9 in the morning. The parade is free to attend and runs all the way to Smith and Dallas.
Uptown Holiday Lighting
Once you’ve downed copious amounts of turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie, the worst thing you can do is sit on the couch and fall asleep. Instead, head on out for the 31st annual Uptown Holiday Lighting. This event features hot eats and cool treats from the city’s best food trucks, holiday themed music and half a million beautiful lights spread across 80 trees. Even Santa Claus himself will make an appearance. The night will be capped off with a stunning fireworks show.
You can take in the trees in all their glory on Post Oak between Westheimer and San Felipe. The event’s festivities are entirely free so bring the whole family on out for a post-Thanksgiving dinner blast. Take a look around your home after the big dinner and you’ll likely find that you have an excess of items that are taking up your precious space. Perhaps you have a nice wine collection that you would prefer to store outside of the home in a safe, climate controlled facility. Proguard self storage Houston is here to free up your home’s walkways, basement, garage and living space. Store your excess items in this fully secure, world class storage facility and you’ll enjoy an abundance of new found room throughout your home.
The ICE at Discovery Green
One would think that it is impossible to ice skate outdoors in the deep south at any time of the year. Fortunately, The ICE at Discovery Green makes it possible. You and your friends or family can skate outdoors for $14. This fee covers the cost of a skating session for adults as well as their children.
